Navadurga and the significance of each Navratri day
Devi is worshipped in nine different forms known as Navadurga. Each day of Navratri is associated with a different manifestation of the Mother Divine.
Shailaputri's First Day On the first day, Devi Shailaputri is worshipped. In this incarnation, Devi Parvati is worshipped as Himalaya Raja's daughter. Shaila means "exceptional" or "reaching tremendous heights." Devi's holy consciousness constantly erupts from the highest point. On this first day of Navratri, we honour Devi Shailaputri in order to achieve the greatest level of awareness.
Brahmacharini on the Second Day On the second day, Devi Brahmacharini is propitiated. Devi Brahmacharini is a form of Devi Parvati who underwent extreme penance in order to obtain Lord Shiva as her spouse. Brahma denotes divine consciousness, while achar denotes activity. Brahmacharya is defined as a behavior or act that is rooted in divine knowledge. This day is especially precious for contemplation and exploration of our inner divinity.
Chandraghanta on the third day Devi Chandraghanta is the presiding Devi on the third day. Devi Parvati adopted the unique form of Chandraghanta in her marriage to Lord Shiva. The moon is referred to as Chandra. The moon signifies our intellect. The mind is restless and jumps from one notion to the next. Ghanta is a bell that always makes the same sound. The importance is that when our mind is fixed on one place, namely the Divine, our prana (subtle life force energy) is concentrated, resulting in harmony and calm. This day so represents retreating from all aberrations of the intellect and focusing alone on the Divine.
Fourth Day – Kushmanda On the fourth day, Mother Divine is worshipped as Devi Kushmanda. Kushmanda means a pumpkin. Ku means little, Shm means energy & anda refers to an egg. This entire universe, which arose from the cosmic egg (Hiranyagarbha), is manifested from the infinitesimal energy of Devi. A pumpkin also represents prana as it has the unique property of absorbing and radiating prana. It is one of the most pranic vegetables. On this day, we worship Devi Kushmanda, who showers us with her divine energy.
Skandamata on the fifth day Skandamata translates as "Mother of Skanda." The motherly aspect of Devi Parvati is worshipped on the fifth day. In this incarnation, she is Lord Karthikeya's mother. She signifies maternal love (vatsalya). Worshipping this version of Devi provides wisdom, money, power, prosperity, and emancipation.
Katyayani on the Sixth Day On the sixth day, Devi emerges as Katyayani. It is a form that Mother Divine took in order to destroy the evil powers in the cosmos. She was created by the gods' wrath. She is the person who killed Mahishasura. According to our teachings, anger that promotes dharma (goodness) is permissible. Devi Katyayani signifies the divine principle and form of the Mother Divine, who is responsible for natural catastrophes and tragedies. She is the rage that erupts in the universe to restore equilibrium. On the sixth day, Devi Katyayani is called to put a stop to all our inner opponents that are impeding our spiritual progress.
The seventh day is Kalaratri We invoke Devi Kalaratri on the seventh day. Mother Nature is divided into two extremes. One is both frightening and terrible. The other is lovely and peaceful. Devi Kalaratri is a violent manifestation of Devi. The black night is represented by Kalaratri. The night is also seen as an element of Mother Divine since it provides consolation, repose, and comfort to our souls. Only at night do we catch a glimpse of infinity in the heavens. The endless dark energy that contains countless worlds is called Kalaratri.
Mahagauri on the eighth day Devi Mahagauri represents beauty, momentum, and freedom in life. Mahagauri shows nature's lovely and calm side. She is the energy that pushes our lives while simultaneously liberating us. On the eighth day, she is worshipped as Devi.
The ninth day is Siddhidatri We worship Devi Siddhidatri on the ninth day. Siddhi is Sanskrit for "perfection." Devi Siddhidatri brings about excellence in one's life. She makes the seemingly impossible feasible. She pushes us beyond the rational mind's constant reasoning to explore the realm beyond time and space.
